When it comes to love between a medusa and a Vampyre, it’s every man, woman, and snake for themselves.

A Novella of the Elder Races

As a coroner, medusa Seremela Telemar has always felt more comfortable chatting over a dead body than over drinks. But when her wild niece, Vetta, runs off to Devil’s Gate, a lawless town that has sprung up overnight in a modern-day gold rush, she knows she has to extricate her before the rebellious girl gets into real trouble. Though she’s confident in her head snakes’ ability to defend her against attackers, Seremela is still a bit nervous about braving this modern-day Wild West by herself.

Vampyre Duncan Turner is not about to let his new co-worker go into that chaos alone. His Vampyric power and lawyer smarts make him the perfect ally, and the fact that he already had his eye on Seremela for more…personal reasons, doesn’t hurt matters. Any romantic thoughts pull up short, however, when they arrive at Devil’s Gate and learn Vetta is set to hang by morning.

In order to save Vetta and themselves, Seremela and Duncan are going to have to fight fire with force and magic with fangs. And pray they make it out of Devil’s Gate alive.

Warning Contains mother effin’ snakes in planes, cars, tents, and beds. Luckily, our hot Vampyre hero doesn’t mind them one bit…

THE STORY: Seremela Telemar is a former coroner in Chicago (see events in STORM'S HEART) who is now a medical researcher (see events in SERPENT'S KISS). She is also a medusa. When her niece goes missing, Seremela is tasked with going and retrieving her. Along for the ride comes Duncan Turner, a lawyer vampire. The two go to Devil's Gate which is similar to Gold Rush California: lots of unaccounted for people, with a frontier justice system. Seremela likes Duncan a lot, but doesn't think romance is in the cards for her. The funny thing is that Duncan likes her as well -- and it is definitely of the romantic variety.

OPINION: Two very likeable characters make this novella sweet and satisfying. I especially liked how funny the story is with Seremela's snakes going crazy over Duncan while she is trying to be more restrained. All the problems in this novella are external. Duncan and Seremela are clearly bound to be together from the beginning. My only complaint is that the story is short and I think these characters could have easily been the subject of a longer novel.

WORTH MENTIONING: This novella is loosely connected with the other novellas in this series through a tarot card deck that is passed along.

FINAL DECISION: I loved the story between Seremela and Duncan. They are both just nice characters. Their romance was sweet. My only complaint is that I wish the story were longer so that there could have been more story development.

CONNECTED BOOKS: DEVIL'S GATE is story number 4.6 in the Elder Races series. It can be read as a standalone although the characters are from SERPENT'S KISS if readers want to catch up on some of the backstory.

STAR RATING: I give this novella 4 stars.

Devil Gate Elder Races eBook Thea Harrison Reviews

I liked this short story.

Once again that spelled Elder Tarot card deck is in play. After a young medusa steals the deck of cards, she ends up somewhere she never thought she would be. Waiting to be hanged at dawn. If she had only paid attention to the cards. After all they were never meant to be hers.

The two main characters in this story have been seen in earlier novels. Duncan, a vampyre, and Seremela a medusa, have both had small roles in Storm's Heart and Serpent's Kiss.

Duncan has agreed to help Seremela retrieve her wild niece from the lawless town of Devil's Gate. It allows him to spend more time with Seremels, something he is looking forward to. He has had his eye on her for personal reasons for some time now. But he's also concerned about her going off on her own to someplace like Devil's Gate. Even though she is very capable of using her snakes to defend herself, he knows she is too soft for what she is likely to find at Devil's Gate.

I liked seeing these two characters again. And they have a past together, so their romance didn't feel as rushed as it has in the other novellas.

And our mysterious deck of Tarot cards finds a new owner at the end of the story. I'm betting that's not the last time we see them.
DEVIL'S GATE (Elder Races novella #3 (4.6)) by Thea Harrison

DEVIL'S GATE is the 3rd novella in Thea Harrison's Novel of the Elder Races series. Unlike the previous two novellas, Devil's Gate stayed true to the Elder Race characters. Natural Evil and True Colors ventured down a different path, and one that was not as enticing or exciting, but with Devil's Gate Thea has, once again, found her style. There is little reference to the `magical Tarot cards' until the final couple of chapters and only then, with reference to their mystical powers.

Seremela Telemar is the heroine. We were first introduced to the medusa/medical examiner in Storm's Heart and Serpent's Kiss, but in Devil's Gate Seremela has her own story to tell. With her niece Vetta missing and held captive in the magical encampment of Devil's Gate, Seremela makes it her mission to, once again, set about rescuing her troubled niece. But her new position with Carling and Rune has yet to begin and she is already asking for a leave, knowing that this will probably not be the last time.

Duncan Turner vampire/lawyer will not let Seremela attempt a rescue of Vetta by herself. Working for Carling and Rune, he is aware of Seremela's predicament and has asked that he be kept abreast of Seremela's actions. His attraction to the beautiful medical examiner is known to Carling and it is with her permission that Duncan will aid Seremela in her search and rescue at Devil's Gate. And when Vetta is safe, Duncan will make sure that Seremela knows that she will be his to claim.

Vetta has been charged with murdering one of the Powers at Devil's Gate. But without a body to examine, there is no proof that Vetta's medusa snakes poisoned the Dark Fae. And the Djinn running the illegal operations at the camp was willing to execute Vetta for the sins of another just to prove his position. But the appearance of Duncan and Seremela will change the stakes and force Malphas to bow to a higher authority. Duncan knows that Malphas's past will not save him from the wrath of the Elders and it is with regret that Malphas must assume a position he did not want to take.

Thea brings back some of her previous characters, even if by way of a mention, including Rune/Carling, Tiago/Niniane, Julian, and the Djinn Soren and Khalil. With the inclusion of these characters, Devil's Gate felt more connected to the Elder Race Novels than the previous two e-novellas. And her introduction of Malphas (a pariah Djinn) and the Dark Fae Xanthe (who takes possession of the magical Tarot cards) we will be seeing more of these characters in Thea's next e-novella-Hunting Season.

Devil's Gate is by far, the better of Thea's 3 e-novellas. With the inclusion and mention of many of her Elder Race hero/heroines the novella felt like it belonged. A wonderful story, a great premise and another well-written chapter in the Novels of the Elder Races.
